Boston and Essex Pianos - Designed by Steinway & Sons
New Grand Pianos from $12,900
New Upright Pianos from $5,590
What makes Boston Pianos so much better than other piano brands in their price range? It’s the Steinway patented features built in to every Boston model. Here are a few examples:
- Low-Tension String Scale Designed by Steinway: Steinway & Sons designed low tension string scale produces a longer sustaining tone and longer life of the entire piano. The low-tension string scale produces a fuller, richer, and wider tone by allowing more partials to sing. This design produces more sustain, is more powerful, has more dynamic range, and provides warmer and more mellow tones. You can hear the difference compared to the bright, brittle tone.
- Steinway Wide-Tail Design: The wide-tail design is a special innovation by Steinway & Sons that creates more surface area in the soundboard than other pianos the same size. This enriches the sound, giving the pianist the tone more typical of a larger piano. The larger soundboard area produces a richer, more powerful tone.
- Steinway-Type Tapered, Solid Spruce Soundboard: High grade, straight-grained, quarter sawn spruce is used for its resonant qualities and high strength-to-mass ratio. The soundboard is solid and not laminated for the best resonance and projection of sound. In 1936, Steinway patented the diaphragmatic soundboard, which is designed to be thicker in the middle and gently tapered toward the edges. These soundboards have tapered thickness from bass to treble. A thinner soundboard in the bass area will vibrate more freely producing a richer, fuller tone than soundboards of uniform thickness.
- Steinway-Patented Duplex Scale: Steinway & Sons’ patented duplex scaling adds harmonic dimension and longer sustain to tone. When a string is set in vibration, partials or overtones are produced simultaneously with the fundamental tone. The quality of sound coming from this process adds strength to these partials. In the original patent, this design combined with the low-tension scale produces a fuller, richer, more powerful tone with longer sustain. These two design features must be combined to produce the best results.
- Steinway-Type Action Geometry – All Wood: Using Steinway engineers, these pianos possess Steinway-type action geometry, including angled whippen heel for improved feel and action performance. The actions are characterized by faster repetition, better stability, and heightened responsiveness – allowing the pianist to play with maximum expression and control. All actions are made only from wood – no plastic – that can degrade over time.
